What to expect from the new public sector BIM adoption requirements?

From January 2024, consultants engaged to design and oversee the construction of Irish public works contracts with a value in excess of €100m have Building Information Modelling (BIM) requirements included in their scope of service.

BIM is defined by ISO 19650 series as “use of a shared digital representation of a built asset to facilitate design, construction and operation processes to form a reliable basis for decisions”. In other words, it’s multiple processes of creating, managing and maintaining information/data on a building project throughout its whole asset lifecycle.

BIM promotes a collaborative way of working that results in more efficient, safe and sustainable methods of designing, creating and maintaining building or infrastructure assets.

The key fundamental step in successful Building Information Modelling processes is the appointment of an Information Manager. The Information Manager will develop and manage the BIM Strategy, supporting the Appointing Party and Lead Appointed Parties throughout the whole lifecycle of the asset, from Planning to Design, throughout Construction and thereafter, Operations.
